Michelle and Tony Wadley established Michton in 1991. Beginnings were small. Initially they started importing a small handcrafted sugar lollipop which they distributed. They also started by calling on the independent specialist confectioners who soon began to ask them to find other interesting and novel products for them.

Being young and keen helped in those early days. They started travelling extensively in Europe and attending trade fairs where they found many new and innovative products.

By 1992 they had secured a small manufacturing unit in Enfield, near London, where they started hand making marshmallow novelties (an idea they had seen in Holland and Belgium).

Marshmallow novelties had not been available in the UK before this and it was not long before they were supplying a number of large British retailers.

Soon their premises were becoming a little too small and they began to look for a larger site. After a couple of months of intensive searching they decided on a large site in Swansea, South Wales.

The move in 1998 was prompted firstly because they needed more space to cope with increased orders and secondly because they were interesting in making their own mallow pieces. Up until now they had been buying the shaped marshmallow pieces needed to create their novelties.

No sooner had they moved to Wales than an opportunity arose to purchase a very flexible chocolate moulding line. This allowed them to start making many of the chocolates they were buying. Although they knew that they had much to learn, they welcomed the challenge. Within a few months they started producing and selling their own chocolate.

Some five years on Michton has gained the reputation as suppliers of top quality specialist novelty confectionery. Over the last eight years Michelle and Tony have been mainly involved in producing tailor made products for customers. They are proud to be able to supply many of Britain's prestigious retailers.

More recently they have been concentrating on developing their own brands.

Their first range, KoolKandy, was launched last year. KoolKandy is a range of "funky" hand-made marshmallow novelties presented in striking modern packaging.

Hot off the press they are about to launch Fred Holt - the revival of an old confectionery manufacturer. The range is packaged in retro-style and will bring back many childhood memories of barley sugar, sarsaparilla and butterscotch.

Michton is a family business with its heart in producing unusual quality products in Britain.
